Royston has some fantastic things to do with the family this Christmas time in 2025. Here at Royston Scaffolding, we spend our workdays building safe structures all over Hertfordshire, but on our weekends, we’re always on the lookout for fun things to do with our own families in and around our brilliant town.

To help you make the most of the season, we’ve put together our team’s list of the top 10 family-friendly things to do this winter in Royston.

 

1. Step into History at Royston Cave

Escape the winter chill by heading underground into the mysterious Royston Cave. This enigmatic man-made cavern, with its strange and ancient carvings, is a source of endless fascination. It’s a unique experience that feels like stepping into another world. The cave has limited winter opening times on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December so be sure to check their website and book a tour to hear all about its intriguing history. Book here

 

2. Royston Christmas Lights Switch-On

The wonderful Royston Christmas lights will be switched on, on Friday 28th November from 5pm. There will be performances from local students, singing and a variety of stalls as well as parties at some of the local bars and shops. Find out more here

 

3. Visit Wimpole Estate Illuminations

The National Trust’s Wimpole Estate is beautiful in every season, but at Christmas it’s extra special with its spectacular lights and illuminations displays. We’ve seen for ourselves how magical this is and it’s well and truly not to be missed – Great value for money and there’s food and festive rides too. Find out more

4. Wrap Up for a Winter Walk on Therfield Heath

A brisk winter walk is the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs, and there’s no better place than our beloved Therfield Heath. The views are just as stunning on a crisp, frosty morning as they are in summer. It’s a great chance for the kids to burn off some energy, and the paths are perfect for a family stroll. Just remember to pack a flask of hot chocolate!

 

5. Get Creative at Glazed Creations

When the weather is just too wet and windy, an indoor activity is a must. Glazed Creations on the High Street is a fantastic pottery painting studio where the whole family can get creative. Pick a piece of pottery – from mugs and plates to fun figurines – and let your artistic talents run wild. Great for treasured and unique Christmas gifts for loved ones. It’s a wonderfully calm and fun way to spend an afternoon, and you get a lasting souvenir. Find out more

 

6. Discover Local History at Royston Museum

Winter is the perfect season for a bit of indoor culture. Royston Museum is a local gem, packed with fascinating stories and artefacts about our town’s past. It’s a great educational trip for the kids, with engaging displays that bring history to life. The museum is free to enter and offers a warm and welcoming escape from the cold. Find out more

 

7. Take a Trip on the Audley End Miniature Railway

Experience some festive magic at the Audley End Miniature Railway. During the winter months, they run special events, including their famous Christmas Special. A ride on the steam train through the decorated woods to meet Father Christmas is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. It’s incredibly popular, so booking well in advance is essential. 8. See the Winter Wildlife at Shepreth Wildlife Park

Just a short drive from Royston, Shepreth Wildlife Park is open year-round and offers a fantastic family day out. Many animals are still active in the winter, and the park is often quieter, giving you a better chance to see the tigers, red pandas, and otters. They also have an indoor soft play area, “Dino’s Dyno-Mite,” for a warm-up break. Find out more

 

9. Witness Aviation History at IWM Duxford

For a day out that will impress all ages, head to IWM Duxford. This historic airfield and museum of aviation is vast, with many of its impressive hangars providing shelter from the winter weather. You can get up close to iconic aircraft and explore fascinating exhibitions about Britain’s wartime history. It’s both an educational and awe-inspiring day out. Find out more

 

10. Glide into a winter wonderland in Cambridge

For a truly festive day out, take a short trip into Cambridge at Parker’s Piece for the Chrstmas market, Ice Rink, Big Wheel and Christmas Tree Maze. Enjoy the festive atmosphere with funfair rides, Christmas street food and warming cups of hot chocolate. It’s a wonderful way to embrace the Christmas spirit with the whole family. Find out more
